Been listening to some covers of this song and there are plenty out there. Whitney, Jennifer, and Chaka, just to name a few and while I like all of them, they seem to embellish hella high notes a little too much and this seems to be what many want to hear. I oftentimes think they get carried away with it but are determined to show everybody their vocal range many times in one song, which ruins the song for me. It's overkill. Anyway, I found this cover and liked her version much better than the others. She sang the song very soulfully without a lot of superficial high notes, trills, and all the other extra fanfare. I've always loved the song, especially by Aretha but I really like Wendy Moten's cover better than the rest. She kept her feet on the ground and sang the h$ll out of this song.

This is a flawed performance. Her head voice at the beginning and especially at the end had me nervous for her. Vocal competition shows are extremely taxing on the vocal cords, and on top of that, performance anxiety can dry them out. But whatever the cause of her difficulties, Janice's brilliance is that in the context of her back story and the other-worldly intensity and passion of her full-throated middle verses, these vocal glitches became a metaphor for the Story she was singing about, her life. This is a very good pop song with a strong anthemic melody, but the lyrics are actually pretty shallow--to paraphrase, nothing I've ever done has meaning if some (pardon my assumption) guy doesn't want me. But when Janice sings those same words, the (guy) is irrelevant. We can see the lines on your face, Janice, and we know why your head was shaved. And the rest of the performance is Janice embodying fierceness in the face of unimaginable personal challenges. It's so raw and so real and I keep looking it up every now and then. It still moves me.
